1% to Greenbank Farm Agriculture Training Center (GFATC)
Cook on Clay is committed to supporting sustainable food system practices in our community and beyond. We are excited to announce that we are now donating 1% of all website sales to the Greenbank Farm Agriculture Training Center (GFATC) on Whidbey Island in WA, also the home to Cook on Clay.
GFATC is a unique program that trains new farmers and provides continuing education for beginning farmers and interns working on any of a handful of Whidbey Island’s small farms. The GFATC teaches research and direct marketing which includes Farmers Markets, a weekly 40-member Community Farm Shares (CSA) program, the local hospital, local grocery stores, a new farm-to-school program as classroom extensions for hands-on experience. To view details of the GFATC program go to: www.greenbankfarm.com
“Today so few people farm that vital knowledge of how to farm is disappearing. The average age of American farmers is over 55 years old and approaching 60. The proportion of principal farm operators younger than 35 dropped from 15.9 % in 1982 to 5.8 % in 2002. Of all the dismal statistics I know, these are surely among the most frightening. Who will be growing our food twenty years from now? With less oil and gas available, we will need far more knowledge and muscle power devoted to food production, and thus, far more people on the farm than we have currently.” -- from Fifty Million Farmersby Richard Heinberg:http://www.energybulletin.net/node/22584
